Nielsen is releasing the Advance Television Household Universe estimates for the 2021-2022 television season. We estimate that the total number of U.S. television households for the 2021-2022 television season will be 121.6 million homes, an increase of 0.5% from the 2020-2021 estimate. The number of persons aged 2+ in U.S. TV households is estimated to be 309.4 million, an increase of 0.5% from last year. Increases are also seen for Hispanic TV households, Black TV households, and Asian TV households.

Nielsen’s total household and population estimates are based on the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau and other sources. To convert the total household and population estimates to TV households and persons therein, Nielsen applies estimated television penetration levels, based on recently observed levels within our samples.

The Advance 2021-2022 Universe Estimates assume a TV penetration of 96.3% for January 2022, an increase of 0.1 percentage points from the 96.2% estimated last year for January 2021.

Increases are seen for Hispanic TV households, Black TV households, and Asian TV HHs.
